Pocket Devil Review: Awesome Start. Now Distance From The ‘Gods!

EyeDip takes an iPhone cult hit and *almost* makes a complete replica of it. Are you ready to go to hell?

Pocket Devil ($0.99)

Bolt Creative has ruled the AppStore with Pocket God for months. With EyeDip creating a polar opposite of the gods, they’ve enjoyed a similar early success as Pocket God.

The real test is yet to come however. Can they keep up with the updates and satisfy their customers?

Presentation

The game’s design looks eerily familiar with Pocket God’s. From the island centerpiece to the number of devils (actually called Mugat2’s compared to Pocket God’s pygmies) you can play with. The only real difference is with the buttons. PG has it on the top, while PD has it on the left bar.

However, Pocket Devil really falls through on the smoothness of its animations which we’re hopeful can be fixed soon. Moving Mugat2’s lag a little bit meaning the animations need to be a little more specific in movement to make it smoother.

Controls

You tap on the cannon to launch the devils. You can then pick up the devils by touch, lift them, throw them or do whatever you want with ‘em. The rest of the controls I’d let you figure out yourself (hint: left bar, weapons/destructors).

Gameplay

The initial version of the game comes with 6 weapons of choice: rain of fire, head slicers, shackles, bony fish, angel maker and gasoline.

I’ll admit the ways the Mugat2’s die are more gory and bloody than PG. You get to see heads fall up, carotid glands spew blood and mutilation by skinny fishes.

Overall, I think the first version comes with enough ways to screw with Mugat2’s. Let’s hope they can keep it up with future updates.

Suggestions

First and foremost, it’s obvious that the game is an exact takeoff from Pocket God. That said, I’d like to first request a game change. The name Pocket Devil is a little TOO synonymous with Pocket God, and we find it tacky.

Second of all, I sincerely hope the updates don’t go down a literal linear path similar to Pocket God. I do hope that the updates are as fun, but I’d like to see uniqueness, quality of updates, and fast turn around times.

Lastly, let’s make the animations smoother and pray to the gods they CAN keep up with meaningful updates.

Conclusion

The first version of Pocket Devil gets the job done. Super faithful Pocket God fans do feel a little hurt as Pocket Devil is a complete takeoff from Pocket God, and they’ve let themselves heard (see AppStore Reviews).

We really would like to let this first version slip by as we found the game to be quite enjoyable. What we’re really hoping for in future versions is for Pocket Devil to create its own identity and get out of the mold of being called “Pocket God 2.0″. Good luck EyeDip!
