Draw Slasher: Dark Ninja vs Pirate Monkey ($0.99; FREE)

Draw Slasher: Dark Ninja vs Pirate Monkey Zombies brings together the two in a creative slashing game. You take on the role of a ninja that must slash pirate monkey zombies. The game looks great, easy to understand and play, and OF integrated!

Presentation

The graphics are one of the most noticeable qualities of this game, and I must say, they’re AWESOME! The black and white decision was a good one. It doesn’t distract or take away from the game compared to others that have a variety of colors splashed on the screen.

Everything has detail from the different pirate zombies to the moving background. Game sounds go well, as it sets a good atmosphere to take down those enemies.

Controls

This should be easy. Movement buttons are located at the bottom left. The arrows correspond to the direction you want to go. To slash the PMZ you just quickly draw a line by touching on the screen. You’ll see a red line that shows where the ninja will slice through.

The cool thing here is that there’s no limitations to how you can slash away. It can be anything from left, right, vertically, diagonally, or just plain curves.

Gameplay

So now that you understand the controls, lets get into the game. There’s only 1 background. No customizable attributes or moves to make the ninja even more badass. Although there are differences in the PMZ they can get repetitive, and no difference in how they die. The game has 2 modes, endless and survival. But those categories break down even more.

Endless has either the option of going by waves, hardcore, or classic, while survival has stages of 15, 30, or 45. Although there’s a bunch of modes from the looks of this, it all really seems the same and the goal is equally similar. You must slash away at enemies before the timer runs out or you die. A life meter located at the top left starts to drain if you get too close to the PMZ and are in range of attack. There is a way to refill the meter if you stand still, (although it doesn’t apply in all modes).

However, if your quick enough to slash away you can reach a good amount of combos to rack up major points. A goal is displayed at the bottom to tell you how many PMZ are left to kill before the countdown begins and you also see how many you’ve slaughtered. I like the fact that Mass Creation added OF support so now you can boast your killings online and there’s also achievements to unlock.

Suggestions

I think this game has a good start, as it looks really great, but needs more to it to keep you playing. It’s good to see 6 modes, but it doesn’t really seem all different, I think they should rethink game modes. Also it would be cool to be able to upgrade your ninja or just be able to customize it somehow, more moves and such.

One other thing is the actual slashing action. For newcomers it might take time to some time to get used to it since you have to quickly draw a line and not just drag your finger along the screen since it can mess you up if you have a good combo going.

Conclusion

Overall, the game is presented well based on just looks. If you think about it, there’s only 1 map, (for now, an update with a new map is on the way) and maybe 2 modes. The game does get repetitive and sometimes takes a while to rack up major points. At least it has online leaderboards and achievements. For only .99¢ it’s not a bad purchase but I hope the devs release a reaallly amazing update soon.

The update has been released with the addition of a new map Sakura Garden (pictured above). Now there’s really no reason to not download the game!
