The Hero Review: Get A Full Heaping of iPhone Gaming Badass-ery!

This game started out well below my radars but since the first time I played it, it shot right up to must have iPhone game.

The Hero ($1.99)

The previews started out cool, but there wasn’t really any indication of what the game will be. The Hero is a combination of great controls, graphics and a delightful and ridiculously funny storyline. This game is in a totally whole new class for Chillingo delivered by Traplight Games.

Presentation

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: The Incredibles by Disney/Pixar. The main character looks undeniably like Mr Incredible and I doubt Traplight would even deny it. The overall ambiance of the game though reminds me of Watchmen. I liked both movies and they make for a killer combination.

Now strictly talking about graphics, animation and sounds, this game is in a league of its own. The overall presentation, design (from the levels to the level select screen), and even the storyline dialogue pop ups are very nicely done. And the sounds? Perfectly suits the game!

Controls

The game is either tilt or dpad controlled. The Hero however feels more natural dpad controlled. To explain how the controls work, I’d reference another awesome game MiniSquadron. The left stick is for moving around while the right button is for accelerating. As you get further in the game, you’ll get a second button for powerups.

Gameplay

The Hero follows a linear type of gameplay which is to kill the enemies by plowing right through them. There are two things to keep note of: your “fame” bar which is kept full by highfiving/touching your fans AND avoiding civilian cars. When the fame bar hits zero, game’s over.

For those looking for variety in the gameplay, this isn’t your game. Hold on though! Each level is uniquely designed and some time trial modes are presented on some of the levels. The enemies do vary as well from insects, bombs, babies, and a whole lot of crazy I’d rather not spoil.

The game is Crystal Network supported which means you can earn medals for achievements as well as powerups which you can use for crime fighting within the game (take Freeze for example).

Lastly, as you complete levels, some components of the survival mode get unlocked which places your hero in bigger cities and bigger tasks. Wherever the game takes you, come prepared.

Suggestions

My biggest problem with the game is turning. I’d wish my hero turns around a lot smoother since hitting enemies really close to your vicinity can get really difficult. You can avoid this by actually moving further away then approaching back to hit them.

Besides this, I’m enjoying the campaign mode so far (there are 15 levels), and then there’s Survival Mode for added replayability.

Conclusion

To say the game came from the left field in my book is an understatement. I went it with little expectations but came out with much delight and nothing but great words regarding The Hero. This game totally is one of the best surprises I’ve seen this year so far. Download it, and you won’t regret it.
