Top Dog is a chaos management game of sorts. It is not in the sense that Flight Control and Harbour Master are.

Top Dog: Farmyard Adventures ($0.99)

It’s because  in the way that you have to direct farm animals into pens manually. You are the sheep dog, and you have to round up the animals. How does that work out? Interestingly, actually. Read on.

Presentation

This is a different type of game, which can only be classified as chaos management. You control your dog, and you direct the range of farm animals to where they belong. This is done in a very frustratingly fun and amusing way, that is very much open to whatever you want to do – your only motive is the score. No animals die, nothing happens, it’s all about the score. Best of all, it is all wrapped in a very pretty and excellently made set of graphics, very much farm themed, and very pop-art cartoonish.

Controls

The controls are genuinely simple. Your controls consist of moving your dog around the farm to guide the animals. You can do that in only one logical way – touching it. You drag your finger about the screen to create a path for the dog to walk upon. You can pan about by touching any part of the screen that is not on the dog, and it will move in that direction. You just move about, guiding the animals to their designated pens.

Gameplay

The gameplay is certainly unique. You don’t have the same issues as Flight Control, the animals don’t die on collision, fade away over time, or walk out of the screen. You are playing only for your own amusement, and to beat the high score. That is you goal. Beat the high score by rounding up the critters as fast as possible. You direct each species (duck, pig, and of course the classic sheep) into it’s assigned pen, by chasing behind them, and directing them.

While each species has quirks while following it, the best way is to slowly walk behind them, driving them to whatever forward you want them do. Sheep cooperate with rotating around groups of them, but generally, that is the best play strategy. This is a gameplay that is amazingly addictive, and difficult to describe. But it is truly original to the platform, and genuinely fun.

* Zooming function. Sometimes you need to zoom, or you’ll end up like me, and playing 25cm from your face.
* iPad version.

Conclusion

This game is definitely something else. It is a game that many would disregard, for being confusing or different. It is just indescribable.
