Skype iPhone Can Now Make 3G Calls For FREE*

The feature everyone has been hoping for finally arrives, but not for long until it gets “taken” away again. Skype for iPhone can now make phone calls over 3G but ONLY until August after at which it’ll be for a minimum fee.

9To5Mac first reported about this update and is careful to note:

Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).

And here’s the full feature list:

- Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
- Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.
- Enhanced call quality indicator.
- Improved start-up time.
- Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

So, any Skype fans out there pretty happy AND pissed off about this update? Nothing is set in stone regarding how “minimum” the minimum fee is for this feature. You’ve got about two FULL months to try it so I guess that ain’t too shabby.

The App has recently been updated to say it’s free until the end of 2010 now…

Clearly a reaction to the general reaction online about the update.

      Great news!
