HECTOR: Badge of Carnage Ep1 Review: Ruthlessly Great

The adventure game with a risque edge. That would be the best way to describe Hector, and it is exactly what it strives to be, an addictive adventurer built just for your iPhone with an edge that has been untapped on the iPhone.

And they have tapped it until the keg ran dry with this one. The whole game is amazing, and one cannot help but admire how they pushed the limits of the Apple reviewers. Read on for the sickening details on this game.

Presentation

Hector aims to be THE premier casual and slightly naughty adventurer on the iPhone, and it definitely succeeds in this respect. The game is excellent in every way, being an adventurer and a very long and deep on at that. It is also amazing graphically, with the cartoonish graphics being well constructed and sharp all way through, unlike some other attempts at pop-out, these are great and clearly had tons of time put into them.

You have the whole, well made package here, with the controls and other aspects being clearly made by people who play their own games. Hector is much hyped and lives up to all of it. The controls are as intuitive as possible, and tailored just for the 3.5″ screen on the iPhone.

Controls

The controls are clearly made for the iPhone, and the iPhone alone. No complexities to over come, only simple design and implementation. The controls are simple and intuitive. You have to tap once to look at an object, tap twice to pick up, use, or talk to. You can also slide your finger around to look around. Slide to the edge of the room to exit. These are as good as possible for an adventurer on the iPhone.

Gameplay

The gameplay is really where Hector excels. You have a very long, deep, and engaging game, where you go from escaping prison with a condom on a string to visiting a pornography store. This is all very much NSFW, but rather than being stupid in this way, it achieves a sense of humour and these elements add to the game in an inexplicable way.

You play as Hector, and you have been tossed in jail, sans-pants. You must escape, and then progress across the city completing tasks and combining items in inventive ways to do so. This is all very original and deep, and this combination of long gameplay (hours and hours if you play independently, a little less if you use one of the guides on the Internet, as the game is quite difficult, and hints are not unlocked until the second stage).

Conclusion

Hector has come from a relatively unknown studio to upset the balance of adventure games in the App Store and become the best of the lot. This is amazing in and of itself. And the game truly is amazing. I could not ask for better, and this game scratches that itch I was never sure I had, until now. Adventure fans everywhere will be pleased with this one.
