Osmos for iPad Review: Ultimately Mindblowing

osmos-ipad-5

The fact of the matter is, not every PC game ported (or will be ported) to the iPad will create as much magical experience as this game.

Osmos for iPad ($4.99)

There are those games they say work better with touch. Osmos for iPad is on the top of that list. Its already proven gameplay and stunning design co-habitate with the iPad well to quite possibly create the best iPad game.

Presentation

Osmos was originally released for Windows / Mac via Steam at $10. The iPad version, being multi-touch, already feels way more natural and better to control that on a normal computer. While the graphics are nothing spectacular, they get the job done and look great on the iPad. The soundtrack from the computer version is also included, and matches the game perfectly.

Controls

The controls are just the right amount of challenging. When you tap on a side to move in that direction. Doing that will eject a small amount of mass to propel you in that direction. Be careful not to tap too much or you’l become very small. You can also adjust the speed of the game to be either faster or slower by sliding with one finger left / right.

Gameplay

Osmos is all about survival of the biggest (see what I did there? :P ). You are a single blue organism who must absorb smaller organisms, or be absorbed by bigger ones. You can tell when you can absorb an organism because it will be a shade of blue, while bigger organisms that can’t be absorbed (yet) are red. Along the way there are different types of organisms that add additional challenges, such as repulsers, antimatter, others that will repel you, etc.

Osmos comes with two modes, ‘Odyssey’ and ‘Arcade’ mode. Odyssey mode comes with 27 levels, which serves as a tour / guide to introduce you to all the elements of Osmos. And then Arcade, which is all the levels you have beaten from Odyssey at the difficulty of your choice. Overall, Osmos is probably the best game I’ve played on my iPad in a while.

Suggestions

While playing the game I kept thinking how great this would be on the go on an iPhone / iPod Touch. Seeing how the name says ‘for iPad’, I’m hoping that means an iPhone version is coming soon. One can only hope.

Conclusion

Like I said above, Osmos is the best game I’ve played in a while, if not THE best game I’ve played on my iPad so far. And, it’s half the price of what you would pay for getting it on your computer, except way nicer and as Steve Jobs would say, “more personal”. I highly recommend it. If you aren’t sure about the gameplay you can download the free demo for your computer if you’d like.
