This year was the year of Angry Birds, a puzzle game. The iPhone version was included on our 2009 list, but thankfully, the iPad version was released and thus re-eligible for inclusion this year. Along with that game, these puzzle games are some of the very best we’ve seen this year.
Aqueduct
, pipe puzzle games are not new to the App Store, and yet this game single handedly threw everything we know about the genre out the window. What we got instead was a truly unique take on the genre complete with conveyor belts and portals.

Beyond Ynth
, out of the bunch, this one is probably the best challenge. The graphics and detail to the game are both amazing, but the puzzle core is its best. You have to guide the little insect from start to end. The problem you have to face: boxes of levels and pitfalls.
Burn The Rope
, the title of this game leads you to believe that it’s a rip off of our next top 100 inductee. Thankfully, Burn The Rope is an accelerometer based puzzle game that’ll surely burn your hours for well, hours.
Cut The Rope
, you can simply call this game Angry Birds’ next kin. Om Nom is so cute, he will get you addicted to his game in seconds. Never since Angry Birds did we see puzzle mechanics this unique. If Om Nom’s addicted to his candy, we’re addicted to this game.

Fragger
, I guess you can say this game pre-existed Angry Birds as a Flash game. However, it wasn’t until this was ported to the iPhone that we truly appreciated its content. The arch throwing controls may be different, but this is just as fun as our angry friends.
Geared 2!
, an update to our top 100 inductee from 2009. It’s got retina graphics and retina display support this year. And oh, let’s not forget that poor little hamster stuck in the middle of the puzzles. There’s no new challenge added, but “at least” we got a level editor!
Helsing’s Fire
, this game completes Chillingo’s trifecta of EPIC puzzle game releases this year. Helsing’s Fire is very underrated and for a while there, almost replicated the success of Cut The Rope. We hope this induction opens up this puzzle game to more eyeballs.
Osmos
, Osmos could easily have been on our Best iPad Games list. In fact it is, as it’s better suited for the iPad. This puzzle has gained awards on each platform it has been. The iOS version was so great, it’s hard to ignore this for our list.

Ragdoll Blaster 2
, OF COURSE! Ragdoll Blaster 2 reminds me of how Labyrinth 2 reinvented ball tilting games. This game turns up the difficulty (and fun) a couple notches using dynamites, levers, lasers among others to create one ruckus of fun WAAY louder than the original.
Slice It!
, tangrams and pentominoes require you to assemble puzzle pieces into one shape or object. Slice It! offers you an outrageous experiment where the gameplay is reverse. Here’s an object and cut it X number of times. The verdict? It’s fantastic!
The Jim and Frank Mysteries
, who hasn’t heard of Sherlock Holmes? Wouldn’t you want to be on an adventure just like him? The game is embedded with twisted puzzles and tasks for you to rattle out of. From the graphics to the engaging story, this is possibly one of the best puzzle games I’ve ever played.
Trainyard
, this game is the year’s other breakout puzzle hit not coming from Chillingo and is an independent release. The addictive factor is there, and this game also sports great UI. However, the game’s success as an indie release alone is highly commendable to begin with.
For reference, here’s our Top 50 iPhone Games 2009. Note that this list is in alphabetical order, final rankings won’t be available until the site’s second year anniversary on January 18, 2011. Please reserve comments about games not appearing on our top 100 UNTIL the full list has been revealed sometime tomorrow.
