I think personal and political issues can only be called “satire” up to a certain extent. With illegal immigration issues red hot here in the United States, does Owlchemy Labs’ upcoming Smuggle Truck: Operation Immigration takes it too far?
“In Smuggle Truck, players are driving a truck with passengers in the back, bringing them over a fictional border. This idea originated as a result of learning that the process of legal immigration was not as straightforward as we had assumed.”
As you can see in the video, you try and drive a truck full of Mexicans across the US border. The studio does a great job of giving you a look as to why they created this game on their site:
With a satirical angle on a real issue, we want to create a game that is fun to play but also stirs up discussion on ways to improve the problematic immigration system in the United States.
As seen on the news, many immigration experts are already crying foul over the game a month before its intended release.
Ray Barrera, from the Humane Immigration Rights in L.A., is against the game. His group is one of many across the nation that is speaking out against the game. He said an estimated 170 people died in 2010 from crossing the border, a number that to him is not a laughing matter— especially when created in a video game.
Apple is known to steer away from controversy. With this level of controversy surrounding this upcoming game for the iPhone and iPad, you can probably already guess what Apple will do with it.
What do you think of this game? Funny or not a laughing matter?
