Gameloft To Use Unreal Engine 3 In Future Games

When Epic Games announced Unreal Engine for iOS, everyone was blown away. After the release of Infinity Blade, they went on to announce the public release of the SDK for all developers.

Sadly, for one reason or another, barely any dev has decided to use it, and we currently have two, maybe three games using the engine on the AppStore. The good news? Gameloft will be using it now.

Gameloft just posted details on their blogs about a long term agreement they’ve made with Epic Games for Unreal Engine 3. Although this includes iOS, the licensing agreement is multi-platform. With the agreement, Gameloft is planning four new games using this engine, two in 2011, and two in 2012. Gameloft’s Vice President of Production, Julien Fourniais goes on to say:

Gameloft is very pleased to partner with Epic, especially with their ability to stay ahead of the curve and continually place the best game engine technology in developers’ hands at any given point in time. Using Unreal Engine 3 allows us to push game visuals with remarkable lighting and high-fidelity environments. We are confident that players will enjoy the games powered by Unreal Engine 3.

Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, goes and says:

There is no doubt that the four games running on Unreal Engine 3 will be visually stunning and take advantage of the powerful mobile gaming devices. We are thrilled to provide our technology to Gameloft and look forward to a lasting collaboration.

Gameloft produces a massive number of iOS games, and although they’ve been known to push the iPhone’s limit, and maximize their games, this is a whole new chapter for them. Using Unreal Engine will allow them to truly use the devices full power.
