iPhone 5 Rumors: Aluminum Back, New Antenna Design

Ooooh. The iPhone 5 rumors are starting to get juicy. While it’s all but certain a refresh is due this summer, we don’t know much about it until now. Macrumors via GadgetsDNA is reporting that Apple is going back to aluminum backing!

Decision to design similar to iPod touch instead of using glass is supposed that Apple seems to stop problems which are told widely damages from scratching, difficulties of painting white and weight of glass.

Along with a switch back to the very first iPhone’s backing material, Apple is apparently redesigning the antenna as well. This is obvious that Apple will need to redesign it after a backing change.

This news comes a day after we reported LTE compatibility for the iPhone 5 is not possible. What other benefits do you think we’ll get with an aluminum backed iPhone? Lighter? Thinner?

I’m thinking that Apple will develop two models. One will be just an evolution of the iPhone 4, you know, the iPhone 5 that people are expecting. The other model will be an iPhone ‘Lite’, which will have the phone functionality and will become a replacement for the iPod touch.

I think Apple is going to go this way to slaughter the rest of the smartphone market and bring more people onto the iOS platform. I’m sure that it could be done for not much more than the cost of an iPod touch, and I wouldn’t expect it to canabilise the sales of the standard iPhone.

Some of the differences could be in camera, screen quality (eg. oleophobic or not) and i suppose a few other things :)

I’m really dubious about the iPhone “mini” or the iPhone “lite”. I guess
we’ll wait and see. But I think you might be onto something there.

I really like the aluminum back. I loved the look on my original iPhone (which is still the best back-casing I’ve had on any iPhone, and I’ve had them all), I love the look on my iPad, and I love the look on my 2011 MBP.

My only issue with the original iPhone was the black band at the bottom. If Apple could run the wireless through the Apple logo, and then maybe through the power button, or headphone jack, or dock connector (kind of like how they do that with the super drive slot on the uni bodies), then I’d be batter.
