iPad 3, iPhone 5 And Future iOS Devices May Feature E-Ink!

Apple patents always fascinate us, but this one in particular has us and a lot of people intrigued. Apple has patented what seems to be a next gen iPhone hybrid display. The hybrid display could switch between a standard LCD and an e-Paper display.

It could also divide itself into quadrants that could switch display types depending on the content you’re running. If you’ve ever tried reading on your iPhone in direct sunlight, you know this can be annoying.

The same thing goes for when reading a book on the iPad (in fact thats’s one of the few things eBook readers have over the iPad). However with this new technology, things could change pretty quickly.

Even though the patent specifically applies to the iPhone, what with Amazon targeting the iPad with the screen’s glossiness and bad readability (on sunlight at least), it’s hard to imagine that Apple won’t do this with future iPads as well.

    According to a report by AppleInsider quoting the analyst, White believes the iPhone 5 could be on track to launch this summer, in the June – July timeframe, which would keep Apple’s annual refresh cycle alive.

    Despite reports saying that Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone was being pushed to autumn, or fiscal 2012 for the company, White isn’t convinced.

    “Although we do not have a smoking gun that definitively rules out a delayed autumn unveiling or one that supports a launch this summer, there is a pattern of activity in motion with the supply chain that makes us question a delayed launch,” he said.

    There have been some designs, especially the one by Handyflash below, that suggest that the iPhone 5 will be as flat as a penny. Besides the fact that the designer admits this is just his idea of a new generation iPhone, such a thin phone really wouldn’t be cool at all.
