Extinction Squad Review: Adult Swim Continues Their Roll With Great iOS Games

Extinction-Squad-Banner

The “story” for the game is pretty silly. Chuck Darwin (yes, exactly who you’re thinking of) has found a lost colony of dodos, and wouldn’t you know it, they make other animals jump to their deaths.

Extinction Squad (Universal: $0.99)

So you get your extinction squad to save them by running back and forth with a jump net, so that the falling animals can bounce of it to safety. You’ll play in Africa, the Amazon, among other locations, which you’ll unlock with the coins you get from playing, or IAP.

Presentation

As you play the game you’ll be playing through several brightly colored locations around the world, with fun animations for the animals (for example if you fail to catch one of them with your net, they’ll be chunks of what’s left of the animal on the ground). In the end, the cartoon graphics stay true to the Adult Swim style, and make the game a lot more fun to play.

Controls

The controls for the game are dead simple: slide your finger across the screen to have your squad move the safety net. Just position your squad to catch the falling animals as they fall, or they will die. Pretty simple.

Gameplay

Although the game has one than one more mode, the whole revolves around the same concept. You’ll be catching the falling animals as they jump off the edge, don’t catch them, and they die. This is slightly harder since you’ll have to avoid bombs and other hazards that will also be falling with the animals at random. Although you can’t catch the bombs with the net (or it’s game over), you can bounce them off the helmet of one of the members of your squad. This however requires some practice, so try it at your own risk.

The game has three modes: Adventure, Count Down, and Wild Wheel. Adventure mode is the main mode, with you going around the world following some type of story. Countdown mode is exactly what it sounds like, with the clock ticking down and you trying to get the highest score possible.

Finally, you can spin the wheel in Wild Wheel more for bonus items that help you out, sort of like the spinning jackpot wheel at the end of your turn in Jetpack Joyride. The great thing about Wild Wheel is that it’ll help you gain items and coins. Although the regular modes also gain you coins, Wild Wheel is a 50/50 chance of winning or not. And if all else fails, you could always buy coins via IAP, but that is completely optional.

Conclusion

Although the gameplay is repetitive, Extinction Squad is a fun frantic game that you can pick up for a few minutes at a time, or play for hours. Don’t be expecting a complex game, but if what you want is an addictive simple game, Extinction Squad will deliver just that, with the quality you’ve come to expect from Adult Swim.
