Hopefully at some point you either played or heard of Uplink . Originally released in 2001, Introversion Software’s hacker RPG was pretty popular in it’s day. Even now, you can still get it on Mac, Windows, and even Linux. And now, you can also get it on the iPad.
Just released on the AppStore for $4.99, you can get this classic and re-play through some memories.
Now remastered for the iPad, Uplink plays brilliantly on the mobile format. The touch screen interface elegantly replaces the mouse and all of the original tense and paranoid gameplay is bought straight up to date with this new portable version. Stay mobile, trust nobody, don’t get caught.
You’re an Uplink Agent – a freelance computer hacker who makes a living by performing jobs for major corporations. Break into classified computer systems, steal research data, sabotage software, change academic and criminal records, even frame innocent people. Just be sure to cover your tracks, and remember that trust is a weakness.
In an interview with Modojo, Introversion says that Uplink on iPad wasn’t actually their idea, that it was a fan-made game with little support from them. It was in fact first revealed to them in 2010.
“Well our original attempt to port Uplink to a mobile project started in about 2001 when we were looking at Palm OS and Windows CE. This iPad version started in earnest in 2010 when we were contacted by a fan who had bought the Uplink developer CD. We actually get a lot of contact from fans who promise to deliver ports but rarely have the tenacity, so our standard approach is to tell them to crack on and let us know when they have something to show.
In this case Andrew Carne did exactly that. He carried on plugging away and earlier this year he got to the point when he was pretty much done and we just tickled it up and put it out there…”
We’ll have our impressions of the game up shortly, but if you can’t wait just go ahead and grab the game now.
