Pocket God Comics: Pygmies Continue Their World Domination

While my first choice would have been the iPad or some other mobile/multitouch device, the Pocket God pygmies’ next trip ain’t too shabby either. Guess what? Through a Kotaku and their official blog announcement, Pocket God Comics is coming to your favorite comics shop this 2010!

OMG YAY!

Even more good news? The comics will be released digitally first THEN through print editions. Bolt Creative sat down with Comic Book Resources (CBR) to the pygmies’ new medium. Here are some highlights:

  • When asked regarding how the comics will help enrich the game’s history, Dave said “The comic is a perfect way to flesh out the mythology of the island and give them the deeper meaning behind things that make an appearance in the game.”
  • CBR: Will we also learn more about the mysterious god that wreaks havoc on the lives of the Pygmies? Dave Castelnuovo (DC): This is actually the perfect place for a teaser. We would like to keep the nature of the mysterious god a mystery.

If you were to stack all the Pocket God iPhones and iPod touches end-to-end, they’d be over 140 miles tall – the equivalent of 23,000 Easter Island tiki heads, or taller than 33 of the world’s tallest volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Kea.

Best iPhone Game of 2009 #2: Pocket God

To no one’s surprise, Pocket God is way up in our charts, though surprisingly it’s not #1. The game became an instant hit in the iPhone world, and almost every iPhone owner out there has it.

What is it? You are god, you can be nice, or you can…..drown the pygmies, turn them into zombies who dance to Thriller, atc. It also has a number of cross-promotions with other apps (such as Doodle Jump, Harbor Master, etc.). It even has mini-games you can compete with / challenge your friends with though OpenFeint.

Pocket God Turns 1 Year Old: Happy Birthday Pygmies!

The title is a bit misleading since the technical date of their anniversary was yesterday. Still we want to commemorate one of the biggest successes (and continue to do so) of the AppStore so far. Bolt Creative’s Pocket God has turned ONE (very successful) YEAR old!

pocket-god-one-year

March 2, 2009 was the very first day we posted any news regarding this game back when it was more of an app so to speak. Now with multitudes of updates later, it has branched into a collection of minigames without ever charging for an update. Let’s look at some of the most memorable Pocket God ONLY features we did in 2009!

Year In Casual Gaming: Doodle Jump, Pocket God, Moron Test, Run + More

This past year the AppStore had its ups and downs, along with many good and bad titles, so now that the year has come to a close, let’s take a look at some of the best casual games that came to be. Whether you like playing with friends online or just want to beat your last high score, there were plenty to choose from.

A quick favorite was Doodle Jump. This game blewup very fast, as it took something so simple as a jumping character that had to avoid falling and running into things and made it an extremely fun game.

Updates that followed showed how creative the devs could be adding more obstacles, some that depicted specific holidays, helpful objects, and even hidden content. This ones a MUST HAVE.

This next game got me addicted to side scrollers again. Run! is the name and as you can guess, you have run the course. Sounds easy right? WRONG! You have over ten obstacles that you must watch out for and your only defense is a rocket launcher and your fighting skills.

Run has had a decent update schedule, as it has improved a lot. What makes this a seller is the feature of customizing a “run” and then being able to challenge friends over OpenFeint.

The next one is an all online game, and a has taken over TheAPPera staffs iPhone’s. Its called Charadium, just think pictionary and you’ll see why its so much fun.

It’s easy to play with friends or just the world and see how good you are. Race against a timer as you either guess what the drawing is or get others to figure yours out.

Ever tested how effortlessly you can be stumped over something that turns out to be really easy? No? Well The Moron Test can do just that. Now with three exams, this app has you saying “huh?” and “Ohhhhhhh” while laughing at your own clumsiness.

What’s more fun is watching as your friends get stuck trying to figure it out. But with practice and clever thinking, you’ll get it done and don’t forget to boast your times over facebook.

The pygmies of a certain island is next so just do NOT close the tab just yet!

Year in Indie Devs: Bolt, Imangi, Critical Thought Lead The Pack

We’ve discussed the Big Developers already so let’s now focus on the smaller (maybe mightier) devs, the Indies! The AppStore has been outrageous lately with all the wacky and entertaining app. This year has been a phenomenal for our Indie Devs and their games. Watching them like an eagle’s eye, we’ve all seen what they’re capable of and surely anticipate new releases. Let’s discuss some of the more prominent ones…

Bolt Creative (Pocket God)

First we have Pocket God, the first interactive, god-feeling app that puts you in control of these little monsters, Pygmies. You can pretty much “man-handle” them by throwing them in the sea to drown, feed them sharks, start a fire, a title wave, and even wake a giant ice monster. Pretty intense eh? Well that’s nothing.

pocket-god-2

Developed and published by Bolt Creative’s Dave Castelnuovo, this game holds nothing but creativeness and insanity! Unfortunately, this was the only distinguished app from them, but boy did it manage!

Imangi Studios (Harbor Master, Hippo High Dive , geoSpark)

This developer started hitting its stride with Harbor Master and has since released Hippo High Dive and a game in cooperation with our next featured indie dev. Harbor Master we believe is the second line drawing game, at least the second to hit it big next to Flight Control of course.

harbor-master-2

These devs seemed to have focused on casual but addicting games which include the purple hippo going through rings of fire in Hippo High Dive, and the latest casual gaming addiction geoSpark.

Critical Thought Games (geoDefense Swarm, geoSpark)

Critical Thought made a mark on the store by their two “challenging than most” tower defense games which includes geoDefense Swarm.

They have since partnered with Imangi Studios to bring us geoSpark which is the most casual of all their games but still maintains the blue sheath design their most famous for.

Poll: Is “Pocket Devil” A Little Too Similar To “Pocket God”?

You all know how much we love Pocket God, and how we frequently cover news and updates about the little app. When Pocket Devil came along, we reviewed it and though we think it was (at the very least) decent, it was a bit too similar to Pocket God.

Which leads us to asking this question: Is Pocket Devil Too Similar To Pocket God?

You can find the poll after the jump. We also got a follow up poll: Did You Think Bolt Creative Made Pocket Devil?
