We promised you we’d be recapping the VERY BEST of iPhone gaming 2009. We know it’s recession and all so let’s start on the most FABULOUS free apps of the past year. Please note that ALL of these games are still FREE!
#1 - Tap Tap Revenge 3
Regardless of what others lead you to believe, Tapulous and Tap Tap Revenge 3 still got it. It may not be a whole gameplay engine refresh, but the retooled online mode and some tweaks to the core gameplay satisfy us enough.

And with the new credits feature rolling out (you won’t have to pay for DLC tracks unless you want to, you can earn credits. Read more.). Tap Tap 3 is much better than the previous installments and now it’s free.
#2 - Eliminate Pro
Shortly after apple allowed for free apps to have DLC, Ngmoco released their highly anticipated Eliminate for FREE. They were able to do this by including a unique variation of a “pay per play” model.

Though some people might not be too happy with this model, I for one don’t have trouble with it. I just want to play lag-free (must I remind you what happened when ngmoco made the refresh rate 2minutes?) which is what Eliminate offers. It’s one of the best shooters in the AppStore, and it’s free.
#3 - TouchPets Dogs
In case you’re wondering what the hell Touch Pet Dogs is, it’s ngmoco’s dog “simulation” game. One of the MAJOR differences is “worldwide multiplayer”. Using the Plus+ network, you can bring your friends dogs on a playdate and play with them, give them food, etc.

Again, like with Eliminate, some people aren’t too happy about waiting for free food refills, or buying them, but after all, it’s the best dog simulation game (and cutest) in the AppStore, so why not, it’s free.
#4 - SEED 1
Chillingo’s latest RPG went free, following in the steps of other developers and using the “free with DLC” (or freemium as it’s being called).

It’s completely free to download and play, you can just purchase things from the in-game store as DLC. It’s a interesting strategy. I personally don’t like RPG’s but if you do it’s worth checking out.
#5- Spider: Hornet Smash
Hornet Smash, apart from being a bit of a spin-off from the original Spider game, not only serves as a great mini-game, but also as a sort of lite version for Spider.

IMO hornet smashing is probably the thing I enjoy most in the full version of Spider, and Hornet Smash does not feel like a lite version at all, it feels like a full game on its own.
#6 - F.A.S.T
Take to the skies in F.A.S.T. - Fleet Air Superiority Tactics. Fly freely in a full 3D, 360-degree environment with realistic flight controls using the accelerometer. Engage enemies in locations around the world with 15 deadly aircraft.
F.A.S.T follows a freemium model where you can unlock the full version and buy planes / maps though in-app purchase. If you’re into the dogfighting genre you might want to check it out.
