2XL Supercross: Oh Hello Premium Apps…

**UPDATE: Frequent site visitor IBITF relays in the comments an issue we have missed: iPod Touch 2G Handles 5 Racers but iPhone’s can only do 3. Click here to read the full explanation**

If the new premium apps section will feature apps no less than $20 and look this great, we say Apple bring it on!

2XL Supercross ($7.99)

Who said the iPhone cannot handle PSP/DS like graphics? Who said we can’t have a great racing game without physical control pads? Well guess what iPhone folks, slap those doubters with 2XL Supercross. Frankly, this is the best motorcross racing in the store… and even the best racing game released.

Design

We always like games with attitudes. We like the ones that know their identity and carry it out throughout the game. 2XL Supercross is one of them:

2xl_title

The main screen is probably the greatest we’ve seen. Add the kick awesome intro video, and you get wild squeals from racing fans. But wait ’til you see how amazing the in game graphics look like:

2XL is a company who has developed games for other consoles. It is very much appreciated that they have now developed one for the iPhone proving our little device is slowly going head to head with the other consoles in terms of quality. Also, did we mention the tracks were designed by “Ron Ron” aka Stephane Roncada?

Start Your Engines!

After pressing “Race” on the main screen, the game then takes you to the track selector:

After which you’ll be able to choose your bike and character in one screen! You simply drag them side to side:

These kinds of little touches and added interactivity make up a great game. Even before we’re taken to the game itself, you’d kinda expect the quality you’ll get.

You’ll need to select your race options. There are Time Trial, Practice and Race modes with tracks including 125, 250, and 450cc’s. Afterward, you’ll be taken to a video “fly out” of the track. Tap to exit and you’re ready to roll!

Controls

The game uses accelerometer for steering. There are virtual d pads for gas (green) and brake (red). Sensitivity and control options can be customized by hitting pause (tapping on the top center of the screen):

2xl_calibration

Tapping on the top left of the drivers view lets you change camera views which we’ll discuss further on the next section.

Added Features

There are four views in which you can race including third person views, and first person views with or without handle bars:

2xl_cockpit

As any great game would have, 2XL Supercross comes with the regular leaderboards and race statistics:

Conclusion

2XL Supercross simply pushes the envelope when it comes to the iPhone’s graphics and gameplay capacity. If the screenshots above aren’t enough, take a look at  this developer video:

As far as suggestions go, we’d like to see tricks. We think this is what’s kind of holding up the game. The icon is very neat as well although we’d like it skewed a little bit so it looks more 3D than flat.

At $7.99, you’ll definitely get yourself something worth $19.99 upwards for other consoles. We iPhone gamers are spoiled and that doesn’t necessarily mean quality is compromised as proven by 2XL Supercross.

I am going to be reviewing this game soon, I absolutely love it to bits!!

Only downside I found to it is that there is no real story or career mode behind the tracks, which I would have liked to see instead of just coming in the top 2 out of 3 racers to unlock the next track.

Oh, and more racers on the track at once… That would be awesome

quote from one of the developers
“We’ve always been developing the game on the iPod Touch 2nd generation under the impression that all iPhone 3G’s and any others that came out in 2009 were all running the faster cpu speed of 533mhz, from what many store employees told us…obviously, we should have done more research on the subject!

We learned about the fact that ONLY the iPod Touch 2nd generation has the faster cpu speed 2 weeks before shipping the game. We had to find a way to make it run on the slower devices as well as keep the smooth frame rate…and we didn’t want to remove features on the faster iPod, especially since it plays so smooth!

The only thing that is different on the iPod Touch 2nd generation is the fact that you race against 2 more AI riders, and the tracks have more haybales and objects. Everything else is the same, physics, tracks, lap times, controls, fun factor…. The differences are pretty minor, and I hope you can still enjoy the game just as much.

No not at all, we are planing on supporting this game 100% with updates and bug fixes, to make it better for everyone. What, when and how I do not know yet, but for example adding a career mode would be a great place to start
We also are planing on making other racing games, and thats what I was talking about.”
they never posted anything about career mode although i doubt it will be coming

P.S. if you have an ipod touch you will have up to five racers on the screen and with the iphone only three

    $20 worth?
You know those fake cakes they have in windows that look absolutely amazing, lets say you bought the fake one for the price of the real one, it in hopes that it was real.
Is it still worth the price you paid for once you found out the only good thing about is how it looks?

There’s no objective to this game, you race around, that’s it. For an $8 game on an AppStore filled with games far less costly and far more content-rich, I don’t think it’s fair to say this game is worth $20 just because it’s pretty and plays good.

That’s true but you know time will pass and the cheap prices we’re accustomed to now will not last.

How much is say Motocross or ATV for PSP or DS? Around $50 (on first release)? We’re going out on a limb here to say the quality and feel of this game matches those games and say this is “buyable” at $20?

There’s no REAL objective but finishing first or second unlocks new tracks. Isn’t that an objective enough?

I know there should be a tournament mode. In fact, I just sent an email asking if there are plans to incorporate this.
