Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, Part 5: The Rest Of The Best!

For the last 10 games to make our Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, did you see what I did there? Notice how I rephrased the classic “Best of the Rest” to “Rest of the Best”? The reasoning behind that is I wanted to divide the games into 5 sections and I just couldn’t find a coherent theme to glue these last 10 games together. They’re in NO WAY better or less than the first 40. Let’s just get that out the way…

CANABALT, a very respectable port of the Flash game to the iPhone. The soundtrack and artwork look suited for more “serious” gamers than Run! With the latest update including scoreboards and a new soundtrack, no wonder this is a serious gaming addiction.

STAIR DISMOUNT, the game’s first released started a bit slow in a sense that some key features are missing. In a game where the goal is to throw dummy’s off different stairs for the highest score, they sure corrected everything that was wrong in the game’s second version.

JET CAR STUNTS, this game should have really made our Best Suprises list but it somehow found its way here. A very different racing game I should say, what with on and above ground drifts, and great gameplay design… Jet Car is a sure winner!

RUN!, the more casual of the “run as far as you can” games makes our list as well solely because of the plethora of features Canabalt is “lacking”. Most notably: customize and send challenges, more diverse enemies, quick modes and lives system.

ALIVE 4-EVER, this game did what Minigore has been promising for so long: multiplayer (though local only… for now). Who would not want a zombie shoot fest complete with a career mode featuring different weapons and locations?

alive-4-ever-r1-2

METEOR BLITZ, a graphically stunning dual stick shooter. Don’t be fooled! Even though the backdrop of planets on a pseudo 3D look really nice, the gameplay doesn’t disappoint either. Must have action-arcade game!

BUST-A-MOVE, this game makes our list as well seeing Taito ported yet another gaming classic to the platform. Many try to copy the original but those are all just wannabes. When this balls popping game arrived, boy did it deliver!?!

bust-a-move-1 bust-a-move-2

SKEE-BALL, take what was good in 10 Balls 7 Cups and work with Freeverse to improve the game and this is what you get. A constant presence on the charts, unlockables, and beautiful game design, what else is there to ask?

PARACHUTE PANIC, FDG Entertainment killed two birds in one stone by having a doodle themed – casual game. A different take on the genre by landing parachuters on ships using touch inputs, Parachute Panic is one casual gaming beast.

3D BRICK BREAKER REVOLUTION, sure there are probably thousand of brick breaking games in store but nothing compares to this brick breaking title. First of all, it’s in 3D but best of all, the modes, powerups and overall presentation make this game the best of its kind.

So there you have it! We’ve completed our Top 50 for 2009. We’ll do a complete rundown of the list later today but feel free to lash out whether you dis/agree with most/some/none of the games on our list.

Feedback is always very welcome!

Literally got Canabalt days ago and I'm loving it. My kids love it and are pretty good. My oldest got the #4 local score after about 5 minutes, so either I suck or he's not too shabby. Simple, addictive, what else do you want?

Jet Car Stunts is one of my absolute favs and is a GOTY candidate for sure. Love the difficulty and the need to balance using jet fuel so that you can make the insane jumps. Has a great retro look about it. Can't stop, and won't stop, playing this one.

Alive-4-Ever was a watch list fav for a while until I lost the contest on TheAppera. My desire for the game was at a fever pitch, so I had to go ahead and get it. Never looked back. Great gameplay with a nice mix of missions and RPG elements. Also, great dual stick controls.

Meteor Blitz is outstanding! Another game with perfect dual-sticks. I'm not usually a big top-down geometry wars style fan, but the way people went on and on about this one convinced me to try. Wonderful game and glad I got it. Action is fast and furious and graphics and controls are tops.

Parachute Panic is simple, addictive, and fun. Great hand-drawn theme, amazing music (not often I'll say that), and fun ways to die. Easily tops most lists, so kind of sad to see it at the bottom of list 5 (I know they're themed lists and not ordered, but still, it's the principle).

Stair Dismount is more of an entertainment app and I don't agree with it here. I played Ouch! (similar concept) and it's fun for a few minutes, but nothing more.

Run! isn't as good as Canabalt for me. I played the lite and it was just ok. I'd get Canabalt over this in a heartbeat.

Pass on Bust-A-Move (played other dart games that were more appealing), no thanks to Brick Breaker (Reflexion is my choice for brick-breaking fun…. you draw your own darn platform wherever you choose!), and SkeeBall is best played in the arcade (didn't mean to rhyme, but it sounded cool).

In all, great lists (I was surprised that I owned so many of them…. maybe I should cut back a bit…… nah!) and I hope 2010 brings a whole bunch of new amazing titles to the iDevice. Have a happy one!

This is a really solid list. I especially like Canabalt, Jet Car Stunts, and Meteor Blitz. Bust-a-move and 3D Brick Breaker may be a bit too conventional for me, but that's personal taste. I am extremely glad you included Skee-ball instead of Ramp Champ, because while Ramp Champ is prettier it has absolutely horrible physics.

Canabalt is a cool web game, but I haven't gotten it for my iPod. The price is a bit too much, for my tastes.

Jet Car Stunts is on my shortlist of future app purchases.

I love this list, but I feel like I got punched in the gut! Where's iBlast Moki, Toki Tori, Stoneloops of Jurassica, Eliss, Blimp?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/ninjames ninjames

Stoneloops isn't available anymore. Eliss is on the list. The rest just didn't make it. Oh! These aren't all of them, there are 40 other games we chose and 10 free games.

    • LoobyLibby

      Just saw Eliss >.< still hurts…. :-P

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/ninjames ninjames

Holy crap! I just picked up Jet Car Stunts and I really regret not doing so earlier. It's just the cheap ass in me waiting for a sale. Appvent passed, Christmas passed, New Years Day passed… no sales, bought the next day. Might end up being my favorite game. @GLX: you should definitely get it! :)

I downloaded a lot of dual stick shooters over the part year and Meteor Blitz was might favorite, with Isotope and cs.one coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively (although cs.one had the best music, especially with headphones).

I agree with kdhomick about Parachute Panic having "fun ways to die" hehe. What is you favorite? For me, it's a toss up between the lightning and the shark.

I'd like to give Run a try. Can't say much about the others, but I pretty sure I'm not going to drop $5 on Bust-a-move anytime soon.

Great recap of the year. I think I'm gonna take some chances on a few of the 50 you've listed that I initially passed on.
